Study Information, Eligibility, and Compensation
Eligibility Requirements
Age: 13-18 years old with / without Cerebral Palsy
No diagnosis of dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease
No metal in your head or mouth (i.e., permanent retainers or braces, some dental work may be acceptable if it is not magnetic)
Able to walk for 24 minutes without an assistive device
Those without Cerebral Palsy must be healthy with no known neurodevelopment or orthopedic injuries
Compensation
Earn up to $200 total, $50 per session (MRI, clinical assessments, EEG, MEG)
Travel expenses will be covered for participants 50+ miles away (gas milage/flight, hotel accommodations, meal reimbursements)
Study Design
MEG Scan (2 hours)
A MEG machine will be used to evaluate brain activity by measuring the magnetic fields produced natural within the brain
In the MEG, participants will be asked to relax and sit quietly, move their knee, and will feel an electrical signal that will cause a toe twitch
Before the MEG scan, sensors will be placed around the head to determine head positioning in the scanner
EEG (2 hours)
EEG will evaluate brain activity by measuring electrical activity within the brain
Participants will be fitted with a cap with sensors that allows us to record brain activity
Participants will be asked to sit, stand, and walk on a treadmill during testing
Sensors will be placed on legs that will send impulses to your nerve that will cause toes to twitch
MRI Scan (1.5 hours)
An MRI machine will be used to take images of the brain and spinal cord
A mock MRI will be available to simulate a real MRI experience, including the noises the camera makes throughout the scan to help participants feel comfortable before the MRI scan
Clinical Assessments (1 hour)
Participants will complete a series of assessments that involve sensory testing, walking ability, standing balance, and arm coordination
Arm coordination will be assessed through a series of games. Participants will be asked to move blocks, pick up pegs, and pinch an object.
Sensory testing will be conducted by sending impulses that will cause a toe twitch, and participants will notify us when they feel the impulses.
